Pepperdine Law School Commencement Speech Excerpt

"What you do matters; who you are matters.

I'll close with the story of a young man who felt overcome by a sense of despair when he thought of all the injustice, pain and cruelty in the world. When he went to his place of worship he prayed: "Oh Lord, I don't understand. How can you allow all this injustice, pain and cruelty and do nothing?" Getting no reply, he asks again in an audible voice, "How can you do nothing." Then he heard a small voice from behind say, "He didn't do nothing, he made you."

What a powerful and profound insight it is when you realize that you are God's instrument for a better world."

INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Heaven

Whoever drafted the following Constitutional law essay question must have a funny idea of what heaven is like:

".........[Discuss the constitutionality] of a federal grant to fund a monumental sculpture entitled 'Reunion,' which was to be a thirty-foot high granite depiction of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. meeting in Heaven. The two were to be clasping each other's shoulders while Mohammed and Jesus looked on, beaming. Each of the four figures would be unclothed, since clothing would be optional in heaven."

True or False?

My Fed Admin prof concluded his class with this quote:

"No lesson seems to be so deeply inculcated by experience of life as that you should never trust experts. If you believe doctors, nothing is wholesome; if you believe theologians, nothing is innocent; if you believe soldiers, nothing is safe."
--Winston Churchill
